Course Summary

Eating disorders are serious mental health conditions that can be effectively treated by family-based treatment. Family-based treatment is unique in that the caregivers are seen as the agent of change, not the therapist. In family-based treatment the caregivers are supported by the clinician versus in traditional models of care clinicians are primarily providing direct care to the teen.

This course was designed to help clinicians more effectively coach caregivers in family-based treatment of eating disorders.

When Your Teen has an Eating Disorder is often recommended resource by clinicians as the gold standard for families of those with teens with eating disorders.

  • Target audience: Masters level clinicians/therapist
  • Content level: Intermediate. This course is designed for clinicians that have some prior knowledge of eating disorders. This course does not provide manualized based training for FBT.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify ways to effectively provide psychoeducation of eating disorders to caregivers.
  2. Summarize family-based treatment in order for caregivers to understand their role in treatment.
  3. Explain strategies that caregivers can implement to aid their teen in eating disorder recovery.
  4. Identify solutions to common challenges that caregivers face while supporting their teen throughout recovery.
  5. Explain tools to support caregivers in helping their teen towards independence in recovery.
  6. Describe ways for caregivers to identify lapses and tools to get back on track.
